Kappa Boulé Social Action Program: Succeed with C.R.E.E.D

During this school term , Kappa Boulé works with the principal and counseling staff to select a number of seventh grade African American males from three Atlanta Middle schools. These young men will be involved in a wide range of learning experiences that will better prepare them for the future and prevent them from becoming just another negative statistic. The participating middle schools are: Kennedy, Price and Turner. During the 2005-2006 school year, each school selected twenty young men to participate in this program. Ten "at risk" and ten "promising" students were identified by the participating schools. The primary focus of this effort will revolve around the theme?"Succeed with Creed." Following the initial meeting with the selected students, their parents/guardians and school staff, monthly meetings will be help with students throughout the school year. Archons and Archousai will plan and present educational modules on the key components of "Succeed with Creed" which are as follows:

  • Commitment
  • Responsibility
  • Education
  • Excellence
  • Discipline

Each education module will be videotaped and used in the future training sessions. Each module will be focused, reality-based and inspirational.

Evaluation

The effectiveness of this program will be determined by monitoring the progress of the participating students as they continue their studies in the eighth grade. Additionally, each student will be asked to serve as a peer leader for subsequent 6th graders. This strategy will facilitate the teaching of the values outlined in "Succeed with Creed" to future program participants. Following the 8th grade year of the initial class, participating students will be recognized and/or given some type of scholarship to encourage them to complete high school. Each young man will be encouraged to attend college or some other post-secondary educational institution.

Introduction

As the world-community embraces the dawning of this twenty-first century, it becomes more evident with each passing day that these are perilous times for African American males I the United States of America. According to the most recent statistics, the following factors are endangering the future of an entire generation of African American males:

  • There are African American men, between the ages of 17 and 24, who are in prison than there are in colleges and universities.
  • Although African American men constitute only 6% of the population in the U.S., they represent nearly 50% of this nation?s prison population.
  • In many states, African American men constitute over 50% of the prison population. In Georgia, nearly 70% of the imprisoned children in youth detention centers are African American boys.
  • More African American men are on death row than any other racial or ethnic groups.
  • African American boys of school age are more likely to be placed in special classes for unruly, unmanageable and slow learners than any other ethnic and/or racial group.
  • In this nation?s public schools, African American boys are suspended and expelled more often than any other ethnic and/or racial group.
  • African American men have the shortest life span when compared to White women, White men and African American women.
  • African American men are still the last hired and the first fired in this nation?s workforce. The rise in political conservatism is going to make this situation even worse in the future.
  • The unemployment rate for African American men is nearly three times higher than it is for White men.

In view of the above factors, Kappa Boulé of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity is committed to providing leadership and sponsorship of a social action initiative?"Succeed with Creed."
